Citizen Watch Company celebrates its 25th year as the Official Timekeeper of the US Open Tennis Championships. With courtside clocks and stadium scoreboards tracking time, Citizen plays an integral role at the US Open.

Citizen is also the official sponsor of Arthur Ashe Kid’s Day on August 26, as well as the Exclusive Timekeeper and Official Sponsor of the US Open Series—including the BB&T Atlanta Open, the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, the Winston-Salem Open and New Haven Open at Yale.

Citizen and Billie Jean King

Citizen Watch is teaming with tennis legend Billie Jean King. The former world number-one women’s player and 12-time Grand Slam singles champion is the subject of the new feature film “Battle of the Sexes,” starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell.

The film narrates the battle between Billie Jean and Bobby Riggs which took place in 1973. At the time retired professional tennis player Riggs had  boasted that the female tennis game was inferior to a man’s and he could beat any top woman player. Citizen is the “exclusive timepiece sponsor’ for the film. The movie is due in theaters on Sept. 22.

Citizen has also pledged involvement with King’s Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative, which looks to engage younger generations in the game of tennis and promote gender equality.

Billie Jean King was instrumental in getting professional women’s tennis taken seriously: she co-formed the Virginia Slims series – created to end inequality in tennis pay scales between genders – which eventually became the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).  King also advocates for gender equality and social justice, winning the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 for her work regarding LGBT rights. Her life’s work was recognized by the USTA (the United States Tennis Association) in 2006 when it renamed the Flushing, New York complex in which the U.S. Open is held the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

While attending Indiana University of Pa, my son Pete had the opportunity to attend an event with Billie Jean King. He was lucky enough to get this autographed tennis ball, a nice piece of history!
